Litter Notifications

ALL KELPIE PUPPIES FROM THE 2007 LITTER SOLD

Until the genetic marker for CA is developed (hopefully in 08) we will not be breeding any Kelpies.

However we would like to introduce our beautiful

 Labrador Retriever

 DIACAS TUA TAHI

(pictured above)

Tua is our foundation Lab bitch, Tua Tahi is a Maori name literally means 'Number One!'. However the emphasis is more than numerical - we mean it- she is the best No1!

Tua's pedigree is a mixture of predominantly working lines and a smattering of show lines, her temperament is exceptionally even, obedient and placid in nature, ideal for a brood bitch. I hope to be trialing Tua in CCD later this year.

Tua is PRA clear by parentage and following the mandatory hip/elbow tests she will be bred in late 2008/09.

Tua will be mated to Ch Sinvale Billy The Kid (Hip 0:0 Elbows 0:0, Optigen Clear) in late 2008/09

MDBA MISSION STATEMENT:

To preserve and improve canine life;

To assist dog breeders in achieving the highest potential of their breeding programs.

Dog owners to be responsible pet owners and
Pet carers to excel in their professions

This is to be achieved by making a positive difference to their knowledge base and practises. The way to achieve this is to provide education,support and to show how a standard of excellence in Dog Breeding, Dog Ownership and Canine Care is achievable;

 M.D.B.A. - BREEDER'S CODE OF CONDUCT

At all times I will have a goal of breeding to improve, restore or develop our breeds via a process of selection over successive generations and, before breeding a litter, I will give serious and equal consideration to construction, temperament, health and soundness, in the choice of breeding stock. I will always bear in mind that aggression and nervousness form no part in temperament and character of any dog. I shall aim all breeding to the improvement of my breed(s)

    1. No bitch shall be mated without due consideration as to the well being of the bitch and her offspring.

I shall not breed a litter unless I am certain of finding good homes for the puppies. As the owner of stud dog(s) I will make it very clear to the bitch owners of the commitment and facilities necessary to rear a litter.
I shall never allow any puppy to leave my premises to go to a new home before the age of 8 weeks. No puppy shall be sold without having had its first vaccination and regular-worming treatments and I will provide documented evidence of such to the purchaser.

I will never supply a puppy without a diet sheet. A full and accurate puppy care sheet(s) shall be supplied to the purchaser, outlining health care information, heartworm control, flea control, reasons for desexing, microchip information, etc.

I will provide a full and detailed health record of any puppy I sell to the purchaser showing a complete history of that pup from the date of whelping to the date of delivery. And I will keep breeding and health records for all dogs in my care.

I will provide a written health guarantee for every pup I breed and sell. I will provide on going support and advice for the life of the pup.

I will never knowingly sell any puppy/adult dog to laboratories, pet shops or dealers in dogs or to person's known to sell stock to any of the above. I shall not provide any stud services to such persons (a dealer is defined as any person who regularly buys stock for sale at a profit).

I will screen prospective buyers for suitability and shall fully advise them of the characteristics of the dog as a breed stressing the necessity for care, grooming and ample exercise.I will register all pups with the breed's registering body unless they are disqualified from registration due to a non recognized colour. I will supply the buyer with the dog's registration papers from my breeds' registrar unless this is not practicable in which case I will provide an endorsed copy to the buyer . I will also clearly state whether the puppy is on limited register or full register (where applicable) and explain the benefits and restrictions of that register.

I will never allow a puppy or adult which has any apparent physical defects or which shows definite departure from the Breed Standard to be knowingly sold without the buyer being made aware of such defects and its possible consequences. I will only sell puppies and adults, which, to the best of my knowledge and belief are in good health at the time of sale.

I will impress on the buyer that they should contact me in the event of any problem arising with the puppy or adult and that I will make every effort to be of assistance in these circumstances. In the case of a dog needing to be re-homed I will take full responsibility to assist as much as possible in achieving this end and will accept the return of that dog at any age if this in any way possible.

My advertising will be strictly factual. I will not use misleading exaggeration or unfounded implications of superiority. I will not promote my dogs as something they are not.

I shall refrain from making negative or malicious statements about other breeder's, their dogs or practices.

I will be co-operative in any measures aimed at eradicating hereditary diseases or genetic defects. I will seek information and understanding of genetic diseases and defects and use this understanding in my breeding program. I commit myself to a positive breeding program aimed at eradicating such hereditary diseases or defects known or suspected within my breed.

I will be honest and forthright in notifying any genetic or heritable diseases found to be in any dogs I have bred and pass on any information required to help breeders make necessary choices in their breeding program.

I shall not breed a litter unless I have the time and facilities to devote proper care and attention to the rearing of the puppies and to the well being of the dam.

Any dog/puppy in my care shall receive immediate professional attention should it become ill.

I will continue to offer helpful assistance to any puppy/adult dog buyer as long as such assistance is required.

I will allow representatives of the MDBA to inspect my property or my dogs if requested.

All dogs in my care will be adequately housed in clean, comfortable and weatherproof accommodation with a minimum of 2 hours off lead and exercise with appropriate stimulation and companionship per day.

All dogs in my care will be under control at all times, housing and exercise areas kept clean and all care taken to limit possible disturbance to neighbours.

I will lead by example and advocate responsible dog ownership.

I will microchip all animals as prescribed by law. All follow up paper work will be fulfilled and sent to the appropriate canine authority.

I will exhibit and promote excellence in the discipline and practice of dog breeding.

I will encourage the exchange of knowledge, of technical, practical and ethical matters between members.

I will uphold the dignity of dog breeding and the status of members of the Master Dog Breeders Academy. This will be reflected by the knowledge and understanding, skills and positive attitude toward the members of the Master Dog Breeders Academy.

I will uphold and maintain the integrity of the Master Breeders Academy through impartiality and confidentiality.

I will act and advise in accordance with the parameters of my experience.

I will do nothing, which will bring the MDBA into disrepute.

BREEDING PRIORITIES MIMBIL KENNELS

As a member of the Master Dog Breeders Association (MDBA) I  prioritise the physical health and temperament of my dogs as higher than conformation considerations when breeding. Kelpies overall are a healthy breed however in the interest of accountability and openess I reccommend that people interested in buying an Australian Kelpie or Labrador Retriever check out their details on this following website.

http://www.upei.ca/cidd/intro.htm

This data base identifies the rare but increasingly reported condition Cerebellar Abiotrophy

(CA, also known as Kelpie Ataxia also occurs in Labrador Retrievers and Border Collies).

Cerebellar Abiotrophy (Kelpie Ataxia)

CA is a lack of specific cells in the cerebellum, a part of the brain. There is no treatment for the disease and it can currently only be diagnosed accurately by autopsy. CA, as with other autosomal recessive conditions, will only be evident in those dogs that have 2 copies of the defective gene, one inherited from each parent. Dogs with only one copy of the defective gene will not develop the condition but have the ability to pass on the condition to their offspring.

However CA in Kelpies is recognisable in the gait and a continuous bobbing of the head in affected dogs and pups. The affect on the Kelpie can be very mild to extreme.  Research conducted by Dr Alan Wilton at The University Of New South Wales is currently taking place to identify the DNA marker for CA. Breeding clear/clear is obviously the way to progress the breed. However once the marker is established carriers of CA, which are deemed breedworthy in other respects, can be used in an ethical breeding program to an CA clear partner.

Progeny from a controlled mating are then DNA tested. Clear progeny can then can be freely bred from to clear sires or dams. This will help to retain genetic diversity of the gene pool however it must be under controlled conditons. Banning and avoiding carriers is not necessary as long as the progeny are DNA tested. Carrier pups produced in a controlled breeding program should be slowly weeded out of the breeding stock but could still be used to breed if crossed to a CA clear if required.

Mimbil Kennels has donated blood from our dogs to further the progress of the research. I also have been routinely hip scored since 1996.

To the best of my knowledge my lines do not carry any neurological, eye, elbow or hip disorders.

WORKING ABILITY OF THE AUSTRALIAN KELPIE

With regard to Australian Kelpies I do not select for working ability in my breeding program due to lack of resourses to test and train dogs on stock, therefore I do not offer a gaurantee for stock working ability for any pups produced from my kennel. The working kelpie and the show or bench kelpie are kept on separate registrations. If you are specifically seeking Kelpies for stock work I recommend you contact the Working Kelpie Council.

WORKING ABILITY OF THE LABRADOR RETRIEVER

With regard to the Labradors there is no distinctve separation with the registration between the two lines however I elect to prioritise the 'typical labrador temperament' above the show ring priorities and the fad for colour. Gentle, tractable, loyal and reliable in obedience and retieval with a sound and robust constitution and a conformation that conforms to the English Breed Standard - the country of origin.

CULLING FROM MIMBIL KENNELS BREEDING PROGRAM

Not every puppy in a litter will be suitable for breeding however the pup can live a full and active life as a neutered companion or sports dog. Puppies which are LR are not able to have progeny registered on the ANKC Main Register, therefore they are not to be bred from and may be neutered prior to or as a condition of sale.  Puppies display any of the following conditions at time of sale may be LR.

  • Dogs with one or two undescended testes
  • Bitches with prolapsed vulva or cervix
  • Any bitch or dog with hip scores above the breed average of 12.85 or displaying any abnormality in the developement of the hips
  • Any bitch or dog displaying Colour Dilution Alapechia (CDA)
  • Any known bitch or dog who is  suspected carrier of CA until the genetic marker is found
  • CA Carrier/clear matings will only be conducted under stict controls - the litter will be tested and only clear pups will be retained for breeding purposes if deamed breed worthy in other respects
  • Any bitch or dog of a non-standard colour or excessive shading ie: cream, blue & tan, fawn & tan, heavily shaded solids or muddied two tones
  • Any bitch or dog with even, undershot or overshot bites
  • Any bitch or dog with entropia or ectropia
  • Any bitch or dog with more than 1 missing premolar
  • Any dog or bitch with unsound front end angulation
  • Any dog or bitch with cowed or bowed rear end action

Unfortunately genetic faults occur and whilst it is not the fault of the breeder how the genes fall into line in any given mating it is the responsibility of the breeder to address ethically any genetic problems which may arise. I am particularly prioritise temperament and autosomal recessive conditions in both the Labradors and the Kelpies. Not only the pups affected may be euthenaised but the litters sire and dam may be neutered and removed from the breeding program.

  • Any dog or bitch with neurotic, aggressive or otherwise unstable temperament and does not respond to re-education will be euthenaised
  • Any pup who displays the autosomal recessive condition Cerellar Abiotrophy (CA) the condition is also known as Kelpie Ataxia will be euthenaised. The sire and dam will automatically be removed from the breeding program.

 EARLY NEUROLOGICAL STIMULATION OF PUPPIES

Mimbil puppies are given every opportunity for socialisation and neurological stimuation. I practice early neurological stimulation and follow the American method of early stimulation.  I recommend that any breeder ot dog trainer inform themseves of this methodology. It is effective and has proven results.

    NUTRITION

All Mimbil Kelpies are conditioned on premium preservative free dry dog biscuits, I currently use the commercial product Purina or Optimum for my dogs and pups. They are readily available in any supermarket. In addition they are fed raw beef, chicken carcass, chicken neck and brisket bones and fish. The fresh minced meat have garlic, multivitamins, brewers yeast and apple-cider vinigar add.

No cooked or tinned foods are fed to my dogs. Some people prefer to feed their dogs totally naturally and eliminate dry biscuit from their diet all together, whilst I do feed raw as much as possible I have elected to retain some dry feed for the sake of the puppies.  Most puppy buyers do not feed raw feed exclusively and I find the puppies adjust better to a diet if their guts are stabalised on quality presevative free dry biscuit.

PRINCIPALS OF MOTIVATIONAL TRAINING

Kelpies respond particularly well to motivational training, there is a miriad of 'how to train by motivational methods' I recommend Don't Shoot The Dog by Karen Pryor and if you are really into understanding how dogs tick read Bruce Fogel's Dog's Mind, they have both been around for years and are an excellent read. Here are some basic pricipals I use when training.

  • Be in a good mood when training - my dogs pick up my vibe and if I am over tired or cranky they know it!
  • Make the sessions very short - between 5-10minutes depending on the age of the dog
  • Teach one task at a time - I may repeat the short training sessions 3-5 times a day - particarly if the dog must learn something in a short period of time.
  • Do not introduce or combine a skill until you are sure the dog knows the individual command.
  • Only reward, by voice or food the desired behaviour and IGNORE everything else during training. To explain I do not care if a dog stands on its head during training - if that is not what I want I give no eye contact, no body contact, no praise or correction. Kelpies, like most dogs, HATE to be ignored they learn pretty quicky what gets a positive response from me.
  • As soon as I am confident the dog knows the task - I nove on to something new and interesting ..... dogs get bored too.
